義大利波維利亞島（Poveglia）有著「世界上最恐怖的島」之稱，傳有16萬具屍體埋葬於此，更被當局禁止觀光客進入。

根據《The Mirror》報導，波維利亞島位於東岸，距離威尼斯（Venice）僅3.5英里，由3個區域組成，四處可見廢棄建築，其中更包括一座久未使用的軍事基地。
據傳，波維利亞島於18世紀是一處隔離區，許多感染黑死病的人都被強迫送到島上，死者更是直接就地火化並集體埋入「鼠疫坑」，傳有約16萬名屍體埋於該處。
此外，更有傳聞指出，在疫情趨緩後，波維利亞島沒有被重新整理，便直接改造成一座精神病院，人體實驗的說法不脛而走，加上先前黑死病的死者，外界不少人認為島上50％的土壤都是由碎屍組成。

因悲慘的歷史和過去的用途，波維利亞島聲名狼藉，被稱作「世界上最恐怖的島」，且因當地建築久年失修，除研究等特殊目的，義大利當局嚴格禁止遊客前往。
然而，因島上的傳說太過之名，但仍吸引不少人冒險，有2位英國探險家曾於2020年上島拍攝影片，表示「這座島嶼真的非常非常陰森，無數人死在那裡，你走在島上就能真切地感受到那裡發生的恐怖」。
