這起油罐車爆炸事件發生在奈及利亞大的州治尼日州。18日，一輛油罐車翻覆造成汽油外洩，許多附近民眾前往現場撈取。不過，忽然間油罐車起火，火勢還波及另一輛油罐車。之後，現場突然間爆炸，造成多人傷亡。
這起事件與去年10月發生在奈國北部的油罐車爆炸事件類似，當時造成147人死亡。奈及利亞是非洲最大產油國，由於經濟不佳，民眾為了生活經常出現類似盜油的情況，結果引發重大傷亡事件。
根據《New York Post》報導，死亡人數以上升到至少70人。
